Understanding Glass Insurance

June 11, 2024

What You Need to Know

Glass insurance is one of those things we rarely consider until it’s too late. Many assume they’re covered, only to discover otherwise when faced with unexpected glass damage. In the past, it seemed unnecessary—why bother with additional coverage when windshield replacements were so affordable? But times have changed. Modern cars incorporate sensors into windshields, moonroofs offer panoramic views, and unforeseen events like hailstorms or rogue rocks can shatter our peace of mind.

Does Automobile Insurance Cover Glass Repair?

The answer depends on your policy. Let’s break it down:

Comprehensive Coverage

If you have comprehensive coverage, your policy automatically includes glass coverage. However, there is typically a deductible—usually around $250, $500 or $1000. Discuss glass coverage with your broker. After the review, you can decide whether to remove glass coverage called (SEF) 13D*.

Deductibles for Replacement: Suppose your windshield cracks and requires replacement. If your deductible is $500 and the repair costs $700, you pay $500, and your insurer covers the rest. But if your deductible is $1000 and the repair costs $700, you are responsible for the entire amount. Keep in mind that frequent claims could affect your future coverage options. Your existing insurance company might adjust your glass coverage or raise your deductible if you make too many claims.

Liability policies

Does not provide specific glass coverage. If you are looking for additional glass protection, consider adding glass insurance such as AMI.

AMI Autoglass Insurance

We have a glass provider who offers only glass coverage for your vehicle, which can be beneficial for several reasons:

Comprehensive Glass Coverage: AMI Autoglass Insurance covers all the glass on your vehicle, including windshields, side windows, sunroofs, and rear windows. This coverage protects you from the high costs of repairing or replacing damaged glass due to rock chips, cracks, hail, or other incidents.

Separate Policy: AMI Autoglass Insurance is separate from your regular auto policy. Claims made under this coverage will not affect your premium or deductible on your primary auto insurance policy.

Low Deductibles: With AMI, the deductible for glass repairs is only $25, and the deductible for glass replacement is just $50. This makes it more affordable to address glass damage promptly.

Avoid Driving with Damaged Glass: When damage occurs, you can simply get it fixed without driving around with compromised glass or worrying about the cost.

What is not covered under AMI?

  • Recalibration Costs: AMI insurance policies do not cover recalibration costs. If your vehicle needs recalibration (e.g., after windshield replacement or collision repairs), you will need to pay for it separately. Recalibration ensures that safety features like lane departure warning systems and adaptive cruise control work correctly. It is important to check with your repair shop or dealership for specific costs related to your vehicle’s make and model.
  • OEM Replacement Parts: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) replacement parts are not covered. If your car needs repairs, replacement glass may not be identical to the damaged glass but will be of like kind and quality.

AMI Autoglass Insurance provides comprehensive coverage, low deductibles, and a separate policy to protect your vehicle’s glass. It’s a valuable add-on to consider if you want peace of mind regarding glass repairs and replacements. Understanding your policy and its coverage details is important. If you have any doubts, consult your insurance provider or broker to ensure you are adequately protected. Consider your options carefully and make an informed choice.

*Alberta Standard Endorsement Form (SEF) 13D: In Alberta, this endorsement covers loss or damage to glass caused by fire, lightning, theft or attempt, windstorm, earthquake, hail, explosion, riot or civil commotion, falling or forced landing of aircraft or parts thereof, rising water, or the stranding, sinking, burning, derailment or collision of any conveyance in or upon which the automobile is being transported on land or water.

In addition, the insurer shall be liable for loss or damage caused by vandalism to windows other than the front window.

If more than one automobile is insured under this policy, this endorsement shall apply only to the automobile(s) described under item(s) policy number indicated on your Certificate of Automobile Insurance.
