TRAILER INSURANCE 101

You insure your home, yet realistically, your trailer goes through more elements. There’s potential for hail damage while you’re camping in Southern Alberta, wind damage when a nasty storm hits, or collision damage when someone rear-ends you while it’s being hauled. Even if it’s just sitting in your driveway, it needs to be insured in order to be protected.

We can help find you the best plan and rate.

Vacation trailers can be insured as a stand-alone product or as an extension of your home policy for content coverage. To be covered for physical damage while being hauled, your trailer would require specific “collision while being conveyed” coverage.
Replacement cost is available as an optional and additional coverage. For the first 10 years, it is possible to insure your trailer for guaranteed replacement cost, meaning that the insurance company is obligated to fully replace or repay what you paid for your trailer, without any deduction for depreciation. Guaranteed replacement cost is typically recommended for newer trailers because they depreciate so quickly and their value can fluctuate based on the dollar value.

When working on plans and rates with your broker there are several factors that impact your rates.

  • Claims history
  • Trailer type, size, year, make, and model
  • Use of trailer
  • Driving record
  • The additional drivers or additional coverages you want to add, such as accessories, personal belongings, emergency vacation expenses, etc.
  • Actual Cash Value vs. Guaranteed Replacement Cost
  • Deductible amount
  • Unit Length, value, etc.
